The kratom community of the Bayou State is worried about the kratom ban looming over them. Louisiana lawmakers have passed a bill to ban kratom, and all it needs is one signature from Governor Jeff Landry to become law. The Louisiana House voted in favor of the ban is staggering, and the numbers are staggering: 86-6 and a 26-11 vote in the Senate earlier this month. If Governor Landry favors the ban, we might face a statewide kratom ban soon.
Those who support the ban argue that kratom is addictive, unregulated, and dangerous. State Representative Debbie Villio called it “cloaked in deception”. She argued for community safety and child protection, even though the substance’s risks lack strong scientific agreement or FDA oversight.
“Our convenience stores (and) our gas stations are looted with this bad, bad stuff.”
— Rep. Debbie Villio (R-Kenner)
Those who are against the bill, including Representative Peter Egan, tried to introduce amendments to allow the continued sale of naturally occurring, unadulterated kratom but were rejected. He said that around 300,000 people in Louisiana use kratom responsibly and report feeling energized, focused, and better.
“Those that use leaf Kratom want to live normal, stable lives.”
— Rep. Peter Egan (R-Covington)
What This Ban Means for Kratom Users
Kratom users in Louisiana who enjoy the natural benefits of this botanical will lose their access to Kratom supplements. If you had made it a crucial part of your wellness regimen, you would be left without it. Additionally, this ban would not only affect kratom but also create or increase misunderstanding about other nature-derived supplements as well.
There is another potential problem if Louisiana bans kratom. Other states may be encouraged to implement stringent restrictions or fully ban kratom. If you were unaware of this impending ban, we suggest that everyone stay up-to-date and stand firm in their stance on this matter.

What You Can Do About It
One state’s ban means a path will be paved for other states to follow. Since 2017, Louisiana has been the first state to have come this far with its take on a full kratom ban. Senator Jay Morris, the bill’s sponsor, received campaign contributions from pharmaceutical industry groups, which is concerning.
Kratom has been a viable natural alternative to commercial medicines, which may be a reason why pharmaceutical companies trying to prevent it from gaining any more popularity. It is time to act. Even though the bill has not yet been passed and awaits Governor Landry’s signature, you can make a difference.
