Whole Earth Kratom Review
Whole Earth Gifts started with a canceled concert season, three friends on the phone and exactly one brand on the shelf. The three friends were my brother, Devin Rodriguez, my friend Thomas Dowdy and me. We opened in June 2020, and a year later, the store had a brand of its own.
Every other profile in this section thanks another company. This one is our own story, so the thank yous go closer to home. They go to Devin and Thomas, who built the first version with me, and to the customers who stuck with us through every version since.
How did Whole Earth Gifts start?
With three guys, a lot of free time and a friend who made kratom.
That friend was Payam Panbechi, the founder of KR8OM. Thomas and I met him together years earlier, at sunrise outside a tour bus in Lubbock, and Thomas and Payam have stayed close ever since. So when we opened in June 2020, our whole lineup was KR8OM. That was it. We always meant to grow, and by early 2021, we carried five brands. Why is it called Whole Earth Gifts?
Because kratom is a gift from the earth.
We kept the word kratom out of our name on purpose. The plant has picked up a rough reputation, and we wanted a simple, plain name. Gifts felt right, because that is what we think kratom is.
The name also left the door open. Early on, we talked about adding other things someday, maybe tea, maybe handmade soaps. We never walked through that door. Kratom was the passion, and we decided we would rather do one thing well than a lot of things halfway.
Where did the house brand come from?
From trying to do everything ourselves, and learning not to.
We added our own brand, Whole Earth, in 2021. At first we planned to make it ourselves. We started building our own clean room so we could fill and pack every bag in house. We figured out pretty quickly that it wasn’t what we wanted to be. We wanted to be the store that picks up the phone, not the factory. Dealing with distributors and suppliers had worn us out, too.
So we set out to find one company to make and pack Whole Earth for us. It had to be the right one, and it took a while. We went through about six suppliers in about a year and a half, and Kratom Batch Variation tells that part of the story. The one we landed on checked all the boxes: the product, the price, the service and the consistency. It has been with us ever since.
Whole Earth is packed by that supplier in a cGMP facility in Hollywood, Florida. cGMP stands for current Good Manufacturing Practice, the federal rulebook for making a product the same way every time. The leaf itself comes from partner farmers in Kapuas Hulu, on the Indonesian side of Borneo. That is the same regency where 1836 Kratom gets its leaf, and Borneo Kratom tells the story of the region. Our supplier times its orders around the rains at Putussibau, the regency’s main town.
What happened when the world went back to work?
Whole Earth Gifts almost didn’t make it.
When life went back to normal, the company ended up running on the side. It kept operating, but it didn’t get much attention for the better part of a year. A company has to be fed every day. Skip enough days and it starts to wither.
So I had a decision to make. I could shut it down, sell it or go all in. I had spent thirty years in the music business, and I was ready for a change. This was where my passion was, and the timing was right. I went all in, and in 2024 I relaunched the company on my own. We call it Whole Earth Gifts 2.0.
What changed in Whole Earth Gifts 2.0?
Just about everything you can see.
The first version was bootstrapped from top to bottom. I built our first website by hand, and we designed our own packaging. For the relaunch, we hired a marketing company and a professional web team, and we rebuilt the site into what you are reading now. We redesigned the Whole Earth bag, too. The new one was built to meet federal labeling rules and the American Kratom Association’s Truth in Labeling program. Kratom Consumer Protection Act walks through what a label like ours carries.
We also took a hard look at the shelf. We were carrying so many products that about 80 percent of our sales came from about 20 percent of them. So we cut the lineup down to the best sellers.
Some things didn’t change. We’re based in Arlington, Texas, and local pickup is by appointment. And the person who answers questions about the company is the person who runs it.
Is Whole Earth AKA GMP Qualified?
Yes, since the spring of 2025, and the qualification is in the Whole Earth name.
Here’s a detail most people miss. The American Kratom Association’s program doesn’t qualify a store. It qualifies a brand and the way that brand is made. Whole Earth Gifts is a store that sells several brands, so the store itself can’t qualify. Whole Earth, our brand, could, and it did. 1836 Kratom is both at once, a brand that sells its own product, so it holds its own qualification. Why does a kratom store run a free education library?
Because our customers asked questions nobody was answering.
The questions came in every day. When we went looking for answers, we found plenty of blogs. Almost every vendor had one. Most seemed to be written for search engines, not for people, and they recycled the same claims, a lot of them wrong. Kratom Strain Names shows how far that goes.
So we started writing. A few articles turned into a knowledge base, and the knowledge base got too big to live in one place. It split along an obvious line. The Kratom Guide covers the plant: where it grows, how it’s made into products, how it’s tested and what the law says. Responsible Kratom Use covers the person: habits, tolerance, dependence and what regular use can do over time.
Both halves matter. Think of a good kitchen knife. It is one of the most useful tools in the house, and nobody should pick one up without first learning which end to hold.
Along the way, we had homework of our own. Customers asked things we couldn’t answer, so we went digging. There’s more research than we expected, though it’s small and hard to find, and Kratom Research lays out what exists.
How much is there to read?
More than anyone should read in one sitting.
We counted. The Kratom Guide and Responsible Kratom Use hold more than 120,000 words between them. At an average reading pace, that is more than eight hours. Nobody has that kind of time, so we kept building ways in.
Each tool showed up when somebody needed it. Printable planners and checklists came first, so people could put what they’d read to work. Then a cost comparison, and a 25-page Print Edition of the Responsible Use Guide for anyone who’d rather hold it in their hands. Then a free one-on-one consultation, because some questions need real, set-aside time and not a quick answer between shipping emails. And then Kratom University, a free course of 24 lessons in four levels. It pulls the most important points from all of it and puts them in order, start to finish, with links back to the full articles for anyone who wants more.
All of it is free. None of it asks you to buy anything. The whole collection lives on our kratom education page.
