Powder, Capsules, and How Kratom Is Taken
Kratom University, Level 1, Lesson 5
Estimated read time: 5 minutes
Walk down a kratom shelf and you’ll see powder, capsules, extracts, liquids and tablets. It looks like a lot of different products. There are really only two families, and knowing which one you’re holding is the most useful thing in this lesson.
The last three lessons decoded the words on the front of your package. This one looks at what is inside it. You’ll see what powder and capsules really are, how powder is measured, and the ways people take kratom, including tea. Extracts get the next lesson to themselves.
Two Families, Not Five
Every form1 starts as the same dried leaf. After that, it goes one of two ways.
Powder and capsules are leaf. The package holds milled leaf and nothing else, and a capsule is that same powder inside a shell. Extracts, liquids and tablets are concentrates. They start as leaf, but most of the plant has been taken away.
So moving from powder to capsules is a packaging choice. Moving from either one to an extract is a change of material. That difference matters more than any name on the front.
What Is Kratom Powder?
It is dried leaf2, milled fine and sifted, with the stems and the thick center rib taken out first. One ingredient, nothing added.
How fine it is milled is described by a mesh number. That number counts the openings in one inch of a sieve, so a higher number means a finer powder. Most packages don’t print it. It lives in the paperwork between a seller and the mill, and the way to learn it is to ask.
There is a floor under every powder sold here. You met it earlier in this level: Indonesia won’t let coarse leaf leave the country.
Does a finer grind change what is in the powder? No published evidence says so. Milling can’t add anything. It only makes a finer version of whatever leaf arrived. What the grind does change is handling. A very fine powder clumps when it meets water, and it packs into a capsule more consistently.
A Capsule Is a Container
A kratom capsule3 is milled leaf inside a shell. Most shells are gelatin, which comes from animal collagen. Some are made from a plant cellulose instead. Either way, the leaf inside is the same leaf you’d find in a package of powder4.
Here’s the part most people miss. A capsule size measures space, not weight. The filling machine packs that space full, and how much leaf fits depends on how dense that lot of powder is. Density changes from lot to lot.
That is why a capsule count is usually an estimate. Packages are filled to a weight rather than counted out, so the number inside moves a little with each lot.
How Is Powder Measured?
By weight, on a kitchen scale. A spoon measures volume, and the same spoonful of powder weighs one thing scooped loose and another packed down. A scale doesn’t care how the powder sits. Capsules skip this step, because the portion was set when each one was filled.
This course won’t give you an amount. The serving printed on your package is the only amount we point to.
The Ways People Take It
There are five common routes5.
Toss and wash means tipping the powder into your mouth and washing it down with a drink. Take a breath first. Fine dry powder is easy to breathe in by accident, and that sets off a coughing fit.
Powder can also be stirred into water or juice. It won’t dissolve, because it is leaf. It clumps and sinks, so a shaker bottle does a cleaner job than a spoon.
A thick food, like yogurt, holds the powder where you put it. It doesn’t clump or sink the way it does in a glass.
Capsules are swallowed whole with water, like any other capsule.
One caution belongs here. Keep grapefruit juice out of the glass. It changes how the body breaks down many substances, which is why the FDA requires grapefruit warnings on some medicines. Nobody has tested it with kratom in people.
The fifth route is tea.
What Does Tea Do?
Tea6 is kratom leaf steeped in hot water, then strained. Water pulls some of what is in the leaf out, and you drink the water.
Many pages say hot water ruins kratom. Forensic scientists at Sam Houston State University tested that. In mildly acidic water, like a cup of tea, mitragynine lost nothing over eight hours at 176°F. Heat and a strong acid together were another story. In very acidic water at the same heat, all of it was gone within six hours.
Read that with its limits. The study used purified alkaloids in lab water, not leaf in a pot, and it never tested boiling.
Boiling has been done, though, if not measured head to head. A Thai team boiled fresh leaf for a full hour to make tea for a study in people, and their tea held mitragynine they could measure.
Straining matters too. Water is poor at dissolving mitragynine, so part of the leaf’s alkaloids stays in the filter with the leaf. Customers who strain tell us they go through product faster than they expected.
Many pages also say lemon makes a stronger cup. No published study has compared a cup made with lemon to one made without it. Honey and spices go in for flavor, and no research we’ve found suggests they change anything else.
Does the Route Change Anything?
It changes texture, cost and how easy kratom is to carry. No published study in people has measured whether it changes anything more. That includes how fast it acts, how much of it your body takes in, and whether taking it with food makes a difference.
So pick the route you’ll follow the same way every time. The leaf is the same leaf either way.
Key Takeaways
- Powder and capsules are leaf. Extracts, liquids and tablets are concentrates, a different material.
- A capsule size measures space, not weight, so a capsule count on a weight-filled package is an estimate.
- No study in people has measured whether the route you pick changes how fast kratom acts or how much of it your body takes in.
- The claim that lemon makes a stronger cup has never been tested.
- Measure powder by weight on a kitchen scale, not with a spoon.
Apply It Now
Open your University Notebook to your package’s page. Write down the form: powder, capsules or something else. If it’s capsules, write down the fill weight if it’s printed, and whether the count is exact or says about. If it’s an extract, a liquid or a tablet, write that down too. The next lesson is about exactly that.
